Sponsored by a pastry brand, this trade promotion for pubs, cafes and restaurants led me to look for great pies that are made and sold locally.

The stand out place to eat pies has to be the 17th century coaching inn Fleur de Lys, near Henley in Arden. Their pies have great names and imaginative combinations of top quality ingredients for the tastiest pies in the Midlands.

 Matador has free range British beef steak, chorizo olives tomato sherry and butter beans; Chicken of Aragon contains free range British chicken, smoky bacon, roast garlic, vermouth and fresh tarragon; Mr Porky blends free range pork, shallots, apples, leeks, Somerset cider and sage.  Vegetarians are catered for with a Heidi stuffed with goat’s cheese, sweet potato, spinach, red onion and roasted garlic or Wild Mushroom & Asparagus.
