Sampling at Fred & Virginia deli Leamington Spa

Congratulations to mother and daughter team Jacquie Smallwood and Lauren Castle, who opened the doors to their new deli in Leamington yesterday. Fred & Virginia on Regent Street offers fresh food for breakfast and takeaway lunches as well as pantry items, ready meals, soups, bread and cakes. It will also stock a selection of luxury hampers and gifts. The plant-based deli also plans to hold meet the producer events for sampling artisan produce.

Tim Phedon

Recreate that holiday vibe in the heart of Birmingham, with chef Tim Phedon who is launching his inaugural Greek Cypriot themed pop-up restaurant, Yiayia Mama. On Friday 3rd August Tim will create authentic dishes from the villages of his grandparents in Cyprus, mixed in with creative reinterpretations of some classic recipes. Menus will be themed around mezze, and all dishes – from bread and dips to a Cypriot custard filo pie for dessert –  will be homemade.

For a sizzling banger, head over to Shrewsbury on Saturday (28th) for the new Sausage and Cider Festival. The team behind the Shrewsbury Food Festival and Shropshire Oktoberfest  is staging this one day celebration in the Buttermarket. Entry is £5.

Table Talk – 20 October

Table Talk 20 October

A couple of ideas of how to spend the weekend if you like gin, chocolate and Italian food. Enjoy!

Fumo, Selfridges Birmingham

The stylish Italian restaurant Fumo is now open on the fourth floor of Selfridges. This is the second Birmingham outpost for the popular family owned eaterie, with some new exclusive dishes on the menu.

Okens Kitchen tarts

Keep your eyes peeled for a new deli opening soon in Warwick. Scran will offer breakfasts, coffee, salads and baked goodies from Oken’s Kitchen.  Premises are currently being refurbished at 1 St.John’s.

Sacred Gin 40 St Pauls

Probably the smallest bar in Birmingham has scooped a major award. Congratulations to 40 St Pauls for winning Best Gin List in the country. They are also the first bar in the UK to stock Sacred Gin’s new sloe gin – a must for juniper fans.

Henley Chocolates

Chocoholics should head over to Brindleyplace on Saturday, where from 11am – 5pm Chocival will feature music, entertainment and a variety of food stalls. On sale will be a range of indulgent and unusual chocolate treats – from cookies to cakes, gooey brownies and chocolate flavoured cask beers, Central Square  is going to be choc-a-block with cocoa flavoured goodness!

The Bureau Bar

110 Colmore Row in Birmingham has been empty for a while now since One Ten’s bar, restaurant and private members club closed, so I’m interested to see what The Bureau Bar have done with the space.

The Bureau Bar soup

They are due to open this weekend, promising a bar with innovative and classic cocktails, plus deli with locally sourced charcuterie, cakes and hotdogs. I have ‘The Earl of Birmingham’ on standby to conduct a review for you very soon.

New deli to open in Edgbaston

The Birmingham Post reports that a new deli is opening in Edgbaston.

Locals are lucky enough to have The Grocer on the doorstep and now owner Simon Dunmore is expanding with a new store The Deli, which is due to open at the end of the month.

Simon said: “We have a two tier plan for the new store and the concept is unique for the area as I don’t think that there is anything like this in Edgbaston. The first stage will see us concentrating on the upmarket sandwiches and salad market, using quality ingredients sourced locally, so very much building on what we have achieved at The Grocer over the last six years. The second stage will then be the opening of a restaurant on the site which will probably happen in November.”

Anderson & Hill

Strolling through the Great Western Arcade, with the willpower not to buy gorgeous cupcakes from the 90 Day Café, I went into Anderson & Hill instead.

This bijoux deli has a small, but carefully selected, range of coffees, biscuits and pasta that you’d expect plus the best range of cheeses you’ll find in the city centre. Anderson & Hill doesn’t have a website yet, but their product update tweets are well worth following.
